A taste of trading in the real market – Harper Leahy
“Wow, she’s in 1st place now? Must’ve had a big position in USDJPY yesterday…”
After completing four weeks of classroom training in London, our Analyst class participated in a trading simulation over the course of two months. We traded different products, made sense of new information, monitored risk limits, and curiously kept an eye on each other’s profit and loss. While a few of us had taken part in similar simulations before, the unique selling point of this trading simulation is that it uses live market data and therefore allows you to get a taster of what it’s like to trade in the real market, putting your product and financial knowledge into practice, without having to risk millions!
As an Analyst on the Rates desk in New York, I found myself bouncing trade ideas off traders with years of experience and asking for their insights on why certain products reacted the way they did to new information. News that I once took for granted, I now scrutinized for its potential to move the market. Our class was able to apply the theoretical ideas we discussed as a part our training programme into real world situations and immediately see a result—some successful trades, some not, but all experiences to learn from.
